Prof. Mimiwati Zahari

Title: Professor at Universiti Malaya

Biography: After receiving her postgraduate qualifications from University Malaya, National University of Singapore and the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), she completed her fellowship in Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne.

Her topics of interest include glaucoma in general with special interest in normal tension glaucoma, glaucoma medication and surgery.

She is currently a council member of the Asia Pacific Glaucoma Society and a member of the Malaysian Glaucoma Society, and a section editor of the Malaysian Journal of Ophthalmology (MyJo). She is also the chief writer in the new Malaysian Curriculum for PostGraduate training in Ophthalmology published in 2022.

Prof. Parul Ichhpujani

Title: Professor at Government Medical College And Hospital

Topic Synopsis: My presentation on “How to Improve Adherence in Glaucoma Patients” will explore a multifaceted approach to tackling one of the biggest challenges in glaucoma care: ensuring patients consistently follow their prescribed treatment regimens. The session will delve into patient-related factors that influence adherence, viz., age, physical ailments, health literacy, and socioeconomic barriers, while also examining how medication-specific factors—active ingredient selection and drop formulation—can impact compliance.

A key focus will be on the role of monodose versus multidose containers, comparing their usability, safety, cost-effectiveness, and impact on the environment in terms of plastic waste and energy consumption. The webinar will underscore the importance of individualizing treatment to align with each patient’s preferences, needs, and lifestyle, drawing from evidence-based recommendations in major guidelines such as the EGS, AAO, NICE, and APGS. By integrating clinical insight with practical strategies, the session will equip ophthalmologists with the basic as well as advanced tools to enhance adherence, improve patient outcomes, and promote more sustainable practices in glaucoma care.

Biography: Dr Parul Ichhpujani is currently a Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh, India. She takes care of the Glaucoma services at her Centre. She has done her Glaucoma training from Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh, India and a subsequent Clinical Research fellowship, under Dr George L Spaeth, at Wills Eye Institute, Philadelphia, USA.

She is the member of Education Committee of World Glaucoma Association and past Member of Associate Advisory Board. She is the Associate Managing Editor of the Journal of Current Glaucoma Practice and is an Associate Editor for Glaucoma Section, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology.

She was enlisted in the Powerlist 2015 of “Best 40 ophthalmologists under 40”.

She is an avid researcher and an academician having Co-authored and edited several books. She is the Editor of a Series with Springer titled, Current Advances in Ophthalmology. She has contributed 117 indexed and 40 non indexed research articles and over 50 book chapters in national as well as international books.

Prof. Jose Antonio Dias

As mentioned by EGS, the goal of care for people with, or at risk of, glaucoma is to promote their well-being and quality of life within a sustainable health care system. So one never directs treatment at a condition, but rather at the person, the objective being the wellness of that person.
Major challenges in treating chronic ocular diseases, such as glaucoma and ocular surface disease, include patient adherence and persistence with medication. Many articles on medical glaucoma management reflect a hidden overestimation of older patients’ physical capacities and digital dexterity in self-application of anti glaucomatous eye drops.

Eye drop instillation technique in glaucoma patients deserves great attention from eye care practitioners, especially those aged older and have worse visual acuity

Biography: At the moment it exerts its clinical activity, among others, in Joaquim Chaves Health Group, working in consultation, diagnostics, surgery and medical education. Collaborates as a consultant with several pharmaceutical and medical devices companies and is a permanent member (as counselor for the area of Ophthalmology) of regulatory entities and health funders.
 
Its main area of interest is the study of glaucoma, which has dedicated his research activity and scientific dissemination to the following fields:
 
Basic science and glaucoma
Early diagnosis
Risk indicators
Treatment and monitoring procedures
Compliance and persistence
 
Participated in numerous research and scientific presentations, and co-authored nine books devoted mainly to glaucoma (three of them as editor, and one as the only author). He participated in activities of scientific training courses, presentations at congresses, symposiums and scientific meetings, aimed at ophthalmologists, residents formation, health-care professionals and numerous participation in activities directed to the general public, sessions, interviews and articles in various media. Had participated in multicentric and / or multidisciplinary studies (clinical trials, prospective studies, retrospective studies, observational studies, cross-sectional studies), and also in the development of new medicines and technological advances.

Asst Prof. Poemen Chan

Title: Assistant Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Topic Synopsis: This presentation will discuss using Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) as a first-line treatment for glaucoma. The findings of the landmark LiGHT trial and its long-term follow-up data will be discussed, which demonstrated that SLT could achieve comparable intraocular pressure (IOP) controlled and superior safety profile. We will also address the study's limitations and practical challenges, ultimately guiding the clinical application of this data to improve patient outcomes.

Biography: Dr Poemen Chan is an Assistant Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He is also the glaucoma coordinator of the CUHK Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Programme. Internationally, he is a member of the World Glaucoma Associated (WGA) Associate Advisory Broad, a committee member of the Global Outreach Committee of WGA. He is the first certified trainer of iStent, Xen gel stent implantation, and microshunt in Hong Kong. He is also a section leader and section author of the 4th edition APGS guideline.
